{"id":5737,"date":"2021-10-11T20:59:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T00:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/?page_id=5737"},"modified":"2021-10-11T20:59:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T00:59:15","slug":"courthouse-moments-capturing-the-human-drama-of-justice-in-durham","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/courthouse-moments-capturing-the-human-drama-of-justice-in-durham\/","title":{"rendered":"Courthouse Moments: capturing the human drama of justice in Durham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A local courthouse is a cauldron of human drama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Durham County Courthouse is no exception, as every day thousands of people \u2014 judges and prosecutors, victims and defendants, clerks and court reporters, relatives and witnesses \u2014 pour through the doors of the boxy, gray complex to play their role in the life-changing events that unfold there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recent weeks, reporters at The 9th Street Journal have chronicled these events in a collection of stories we call Courthouse Moments: A young man, furious that his case is repeatedly postponed, shouts about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/?s=burn+this+building+down\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">burning \u201cthis&#8230;building down<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d A Guatemalan immigrant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/?s=sueno+americano\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wins custody<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of his son. A man struggles to avoid being evicted from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/2021\/10\/04\/a-courthouse-moment-i-love-where-i-stay\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the home he loves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A cousin of George Floyd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/?s=George+floyd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shows up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to contest a traffic ticket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those are just a few examples of these short, colorful pieces, which take an intimate look at the courthouse\u2019s day-to-day grind, mainly through the lens of ordinary people. The stories will deepen your understanding of Durham\u2019s legal system, but more important, they\u2019ll stir something inside you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s anger and humor, confusion and insight, joy and anguish \u2014 everything you might expect in a place like the courthouse. They aren\u2019t meant to be the last word, just snapshots.
